Get In the Know With Kim’s Thursday News & Sports Headlines

Good day to you on this Blue Monday! Are you wearing your Blue today?

In local news…

A medical issue may be the cause of the west side fatal accident that claimed the lives of the principal of an Indianapolis Seventh Day Adventist school and two children. Family members say 80-year-old Jack Reed likely had a stroke while driving, which caused him to careen out of control and into another vehicle.  Norris Ncube, his five-year-old niece and 12-year-old son were killed in Tuesday’s crash. Ncube was the principal at Indianapolis Junior Academy. Community members gathered on Wednesday evening at the adjoining church to pray and remember the victims.

It was a pretty somber evening on the Indiana University Bloomington campus last night, as students gathered there to remember two classmates who died in the past week. Joseph Smedley drowned last week and Yaolin Wang was killed in what police say was a murder-suicide. If your kids are studying on campus, know the school is offering grief counseling.

Speaking of I.U., the Alpha Tau Omega fraternity house on campus is now shut down as university officials look into a hazing complaint. The school announced the fraternity’s suspension Wednesday. However, no one on campus is talking about the details of the complaint.

The Department of Child Services is being ordered to pay more than $31 million to a family wrongfully accused of causing their daughter’s death. Jessica Salyer, 14, was found dead in her home in 2005. Her parents, Roman and Lynette Finnegan, were accused of beating her to death and arrested. The charges were dropped after it was later determined that Salyer died from prescription errors.

Probation is the punishment for a volunteer chaplain with the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department. A judge sentenced John Fiers to community service following a July prostitution arrest. Indianapolis television station WRTV-6 reports Fiers is listed as one of the founding fathers of the Worldwide Fellowship of Independent Christian Churches. The woman involved says Fiers showed her a badge and told her he was a police chaplain.

In National News…

The death toll from the historic flooding in South Carolina continues to rise. The state’s Department of Public Safety says there have been at least 17 weather-related deaths since last week, most of them by drowning. Governor Nikki Haley warns that many counties could face evacuations as waters continue to rise.

The United Auto Workers union says it’s reached a deal with Fiat Chrysler Automobiles to avoid strikes at the carmaker’s plants.  That even impacts right here in Kokomo. UAW announced the tentative contract agreement just as the midnight deadline expired. Last month, union members voted down a tentative agreement because of issues about the contract’s clarity and wage scale.

Despite some pushback, House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy still seems to be the favorite to take over for John Boehner as Speaker of the House. Republicans will meet today to decide on a nomination. California’s McCarthy has been hounded by a recent suggestion that the House Select Committee on Benghazi was created to hurt Democrat Hillary Clinton’s presidential campaign.

Despite the allegation that they were attempting to hurt Democratic presidential frontrunner Hillary Clinton, she’s pressing forth and is on the road today putting on her gloves and getting set to take on Wall Street. Clinton is expected lay out her plan to tackle what she sees as abuses by Wall Street. Her plan will include new taxes for certain types of trading as well as restrictions on banking investments.

Sports…

It’s Blue Thursday. The Colts are on the road taking on the Texans in Houston tonight. Kickoff is just hours away at 8:25 p.m. Eastern. Quarterback Josh Johnson was resigned Wednesday after being released earlier this week—just in case. Johnson was originally signed last week as an emergency backup to QB Matt Hasselbeck. The Colts star quarterback Andrew Luck remains questionable for tonight’s game because of a shoulder injury. Go Horse!

The Pacers are also in action tonight taking on the Orlando Magic this preseason. Bankers Life Fieldhouse downtown is expected to rock with a mix of on the court action and folks keeping their eye on the Colts from their mobile devices and through other means. This is the third of the Pacers’ seven preseason games. Paul George dropped 32 points in Tuesday’s win over the Pistons. Tip is at 7 p.m. Eastern.

See how they were preparing…

The WNBA Finals action is shifting to Indianapolis on Friday, a day that Indianapolis Mayor Greg Ballard has declared “Fever Friday” and urges you to wear your red to support the team. After splitting the first two games of the finals in Minnesota, the Indiana Fever host the Lynx at Bankers Life Fieldhouse. The next two games will be held here in Indy, with the fifth and final game returning to Minneapolis, if necessary. Game time Friday night is 8 p.m. Eastern and will be televised on ESPN 2.

The Chicago Cubs are moving on to the National League Division Series. WOW! Jake Arrieta fired a four-hit shutout to lead the Cubs to a 4-0 win over the Pirates in the NL Wild Card game in Pittsburgh. Arrieta tied the team’s postseason record with 11 strikeouts in his first playoff start. The Cubs will face the rival Cardinals next.
