Members of the Indianapolis community are getting in the spirit of activism and making a historic move of solidarity with those here in the city and all over the country today, Sunday, July 31.
Activists are gathering with everyday people in an “occupational” (or job opportunity-related) protest on every street named in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. across the country at the same time, 1 – 4:30 p.m.
Dr. King fought for jobs and justice and today’s sit-in event is keeping in that spirit however, it’s one of many upcoming ones with a goal, according to its organizers, to:
– Draw attention to the systematic execution of Black Americans and the terrorism inflicted upon us by racist institutions;
– Celebrate the joy, love and hope of our future in defiant acts of community and peacel and
– Call everyone around the country to commit themselves in the fight to eradicate racism, sexism, queer/transphobia, xenophobia, poverty, injustice and all violations of civil and human rights.
Organizers say they don’t intend to block intersections because, here in Indy, Dr. MLK Street has historically been occupied by citizens of color (and is a main thoroughfare) and doing so would disrupt their own efforts. However, they are asking participants to intentionally occupy the sidewalks.
They invite you to come and participate. Before doing so, they’d like to share more info with you so they’re asking you to complete a simple form that you can find by clicking HERE.
For your comfort on this hot Sunday, plan to bring a chair or blanket, water to stay hydrated, a hat and sunscreen.
Organizers are also asking you to make posters sharing why you are sitting in and/or displaying quotes from MLK. They are asking you to be creative and utilize King’s on-point but lesser known quotes because they don’t agree with how Dr. King Jr’s legacy has been sanitized over time.
To help you with those lesser known sayings from the mouth of the ‘more radical than given credit for’ Dr King, they’re posting some of them on the event’s website. The hashags for your social media use are: #MLKSitInIndy#MLKSitIn #KingDreamsIndy #BlackJoy#BlackLivesMatter #DONTSLEEP
Again, the MLK Sit-In is today in Indy and across the country today, beginning at 1 p.m. on Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Street.
