Rideshare Carjacking

Source: WISH-TV

INDIANAPOLIS–An attempted carjacking on Monday night ended in a shooting on the east side. It happened in the 38th Street and Mitthoeffer Road area.

Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department said a rideshare driver was picking up two teenagers at the Amber Woods Apartments when two people attempted to carjack the driver. The man drove away with the passengers in the car but was shot in the process. One of the teenagers was shot, too, but they are expected to survive.

“Our detectives are working hard to determine not only what happened here but to find the individuals responsible for this,” IMPD Sgt. Amanda Hibschman said on Tuesday morning.

The driver made it to a laundromat down the road and called for help.

“They are being cooperative, and detectives are still trying to determine exactly what happened. There was another juvenile in the vehicle who was unarmed and stayed on scene and gave detectives an account of what happened,” said IMPD Captain Rob Rider.

“Our detectives are going to continue to canvas the area. They will use any technology available if there are cameras or video footage available inside the complex, and, again, we need community members to come forward,” said Hibschman.

IMPD encourages all drivers to try and protect themselves from carjackings.

“If you find yourself in a situation like this, it’s important to be as calm as possible and also be compliant. Your safety comes first,” Hibschman said. “Your life is not worth your vehicle or the money you have in your pocket.”

IMPD also cautions using rideshare apps.

“Let someone know you’re being picked up by a ride-sharing service and let them follow you on Life 360 or an app that lets you track their location,” Rider said. “Let them know, ‘Hey, I made it’ or whatever. It’s always good to let someone know when you’re being picked up.”

Police have not shared information about the suspects. No arrests have been made.
