We salute Indianapolis Black History Maker AJ’s Lounge. AJ’s Lounge is the oldest Black-owned bar in Indianapolis. 

We salute Indianapolis Black History Maker, The Senate Avenue YMCA. The YMCA, which was dedicated by Booker T. Washington, became one of the largest Black YMCA’s in the U.S.

We salute Indianapolis Black History Maker Bill Mays. Mays Established Mays Chemical, becoming one of the world’s largest chemical distributors. 

We salute Indianapolis Black History Maker Sam Jones. Jones was the first President of the Indianapolis Urban League and served in that role for over 40 years.

We salute Indianapolis Black History Maker Etheridge Knight. Knight was an African American Poet who made a name for himself with his debut “Volume Poems from Prison.”

We salute Indianapolis Black History Maker Julia May Carson. Carson was the first Woman and first African American to represent Indianapolis in the United States Congress.

We salute Indianapolis Black History Maker Robert J. Taylor. In 1990, Taylor became the first African American trustee in the 121 year history of Purdue University.

The Social Club originated in 1960 as the first African-American Men’s membership only private social club in Indianapolis.

Howard University on Sunday honored Cathy Hughes, Founder and Chairperson of Radio One, Inc., the largest Black-owned multi-media company in the country, at the unveiling of the Cathy Hughes School of Communications.
